Demand outpacing ‘Keep the Heat On’ donations
BY BRIAN J. LOWNEY, Assistant Editor

PROVIDENCE — As winter continues, requests for fuel assistance received by the “Keep the Heat On” campaign are outpacing the number of donations being made to help less fortunate Rhode Islanders heat their homes.

According to James Janhz, high unemployment and the poor economy are two factors contributing to the decline in donations.

“There is a greater need for help, and fewer people who can provide assistance,” he said.

Jahnz noted that with wintry weather expected for the next four to six weeks or perhaps longer, the need for heating assistance will grow as many families’ financial resources diminish.

“We need all hands on deck to make the difference for those who need the most help,” he emphasized. “With the economy, people have less to donate, and they see there is a great need in Haiti but there is a great deal of need at home as well. I recognize that people are doing what they can do to help.”
